Kid 3 (upon getting her sandwich): Hey, who put tomatoes on here!?!
Me: You said you wanted a BLT!
Kid 3: Yeah, Bacon, Lettuce and Toast!
Last week's warm weather brought out tons of flies and wasps. One of the nasty buggers stung me right on the neck. Two days later I was covered in hives. The doctor prescribed steroids. It's a good thing I went in --I couldn't see it due to the angle, but apparently the stinger was still in my neck.
Funny of the day: Kid 3 doesn't like tomatoes. I offered to make her a BLT today and she accepted.

To achieve a total fix, the ditch would have to be dug out and the ditch bank piled higher. As a short term measure, I shoveled piles of dirt over several areas. In a couple places, I had to create a dam out of scraps of wood, because the water was rushing so powerfully, my little shovel full of dirt just got washed away. Good thing we're just about done watering for the year. If we have access to this pasture next summer, we'll have to work out a more permanent fix.
We've had a LOT of windy days lately. Yesterday I picked up a wheelbarrow load of windfall apples from under one tree. The ones in the bowls are the only ones I thought were fit for human consumption. The rest are too damaged or green or wormy. The critters are thrilled with the bounty, but we can't feed too many apples at once or they'll get tummy aches!
I took Katniss over to the kid's 4-H leaders place so she could get intimately acquainted with this big boy. He is a fully register Boer, which makes it possible to register their babies as 50% Boer even though Katniss is a grade animal. If we continue to breed that offspring to registered bucks, eventually we will have fully registered Boer stock. Katniss is a husky girl for a dairy goat, so I think we should get some good sized off-spring out of this cross.
Valentine managed to slice open her hip. Why do they always do stuff like this on weekends or holidays? I payed the after hours vet fee, thinking she needed stitches, but once Valentine was doped up and the wound cleaned, the vet said the edges were tight to the skin, so there really wasn't anything to stitch up. It just needs to heal on its own. The cause? Not sure. There isn't anything sharp in the pen. The vet thought it looked like a blunt trauma injury--that she may have run too close to the feeder or a fence post and caught herself on it.
The state 4-H horse show was nearly blown away with the high winds on Saturday. Valentine was really nervous-show jitters, wind, new place, all alone without her horse buddies, a nearby parade with police sirens blaring-any or all of these things could have set her off. I spoke with some other contestants that had similar problems with their horses. In spite of those challenges, Kid 3 and Valentine managed to pull off a 2nd place finish in her demonstration speech on "How to Groom a Horse." They didn't place in the trail event, but I still think it was a great experience for the two of them. It was their first time at State and gave them a starting point to build on next year. One of my long-time riding students was also at State with her pony. She made the nicest Facebook post afterwards: Had fun at state! Didn't place but we gave it our all! I'd say we did pretty great !(: we may not have placed good but he's sure a champion in my eyes! He's such a trooper! Being able to make it to state has always been my dream! And being able to make it with Brownie is just amazing... A few years ago I never thought we would be where we are today !! ... And a HUUUGEE thanks to Julie Kimpel for helping us reach our goals and dreams and for helping us get to who we are today !! Thank you !!(: It is super rewarding to help others achieve their goals! Unfortunately, I didn't get any pictures from state--someone who shall remain nameless fell asleep with my phone on Friday night so it never got plugged in, but here are a few from my adventures with my sister and niece and nephew. We played in Salt Lake City, went to Jackson, WY (I recommend the trout at Cafe Genevieve), went to the Rexburg town picnic, hiked to Wind Caves, spent the day in Yellowstone-btw, the Boiling River is my new favorite hot pot, rode horses, and went floating on the Snake River. |
